Moving for Climate NOW Team Arrives in Bonn for COP23 Climate Summit
Today, Moving for Climate NOW, an electric bike tour which left Paris on 30 October, arrived in Bonn where the team, that has reached a total of 40 cyclists over the 7 legs, was received by Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of UNFCCC and Inia Seruiratu, Fiji’s High-Level Climate Climate Champion.
UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa welcomed the cyclists to COP 23. “It is amazing to see so many people coming from Paris using low-emission electric bicycles. As the UN Climate Change process moves from Paris to Bonn and into the future, this should inspire us all to seek a path forward where our emissions are reduced, we embrace the technology that enables this shift and we raise awareness for the need for a deep transformation of societies. We all need to be moving for climate now – further, faster, together,” she said.
Fiji’s High-Level Climate Champion joined during the last leg to arrive in Bonn prior to the opening of COP23, when Fiji will take over from Morocco as President of the Conference of the Parties.
The Climate Champion said that it was a great pleasure to join the Moving for Climate NOW team on the last leg of their tour. “As the incoming Presidency, we have been very clear about the need to aim towards the Paris Agreement’s more ambitious target of limiting the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Together, we must form a Grand Coalition for decisive action between governments at every level, civil society and the private sector,” he said.
“The Moving for Climate NOW team have taken the call for action across Europe. Every individual and organisation with the will and power to act has a part to play and we are very happy to endorse initiatives like this that help raise support for more urgent movement towards low carbon, resilient economies. And especially ones that also promote a healthy lifestyle, ” he said.
Organised by UN Global Compact Network Spain and Iberdrola, the second edition of this initiative, an official Summit event classified as an ‘endorsed initiative’ by COP23, gathered a multi-disciplinary cycling team of 40 people from different organisations and countries, with the purpose of raising awareness on the importance of facing the climate change challenges, uniting efforts in all areas and the implementation of ambitious and urgent measures to combat global warming.
Under the motto Moving for Climate NOW, the team included representatives from the Fijian community, UNFCCC, the European Commission, the Spanish Office of Climate Change, Scotland’s 2020 Climate Group, the International Energy Agency, World Resources Institute, IRENA, the European Investment Bank, OECD, AIESEC and Ayuda en Acción among others to defend that “we ALL need to move, pulling ALL the levers RIGHT NOW” in the fight against climate change.
The group delivered a Manifesto to the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC about the urgent steps required to achieve effective climate mobilisation, namely, as highlighted by Carlos Sallé, Energy Policies and Climate Change Director at Iberdrola: ”the commitment to renewable energies, the need to see the fight against global warming as an opportunity and not as a threat when building a sustainable economic model, the urgency to unite efforts in all sectors of the society and the importance of attracting green finance”.
The almost 800 km cycling ride between the capital of France and Bonn was divided in seven stages which the participants of Moving for Climate NOW travelled on electric bicycles, as a symbol of their commitment to a technology that is both beneficial to health and environmentally-friendly.
In addition, the initiative seeks to create a space for reflection on the various aspects of the climate issue. To this end, over the week-long tour, participants took part in daily debates on the various aspects that influence global warming, including climate change and energy transition, investments and finance for a low-carbon economy, the need to broaden awareness and communication, and mitigation policies. Of special relevance this edition were measures to adapt to climate change and protecting vulnerable communities as well as raising awareness on the importance of oceans and the vital role they play in regulating climate and the planet’s health.
“Climate is one of the pillars of the Development 2030 Agenda and it is a challenge that cannot be tackled individually. Collective action through partnerships enhances our chances of success, so our aim in this initiative is to broaden the level of engagement reaching to as many stakeholders as possible” stated Isabel Garro, Executive Manager at Global Compact Spanish Network.
The trip’s emissions were verified by CeroCO2 and its carbon footprint has been compensated by purchasing carbon credits from the UN’s Climate Neutral Now and CeroCO2 platforms.
At the UN Climate Change Conference this year (COP23, from 6 to 17 November) nations of the world will meet to advance the aims and ambitions of the Paris Agreement and achieve progress on its implementation guidelines.
The conference, officially referred as COP 23/ CMP 13/ CMA 1-2, will take place in Bonn, Germany, hosted by the secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and presided over by Fiji.

Moving for Climate NOW llega a Bonn para la COP 23
Moving for Climate NOW, marcha ciclista que salió de París el 30 de octubre, ha llegado hoy domingo día 5 de noviembre a Bonn, donde el equipo, un total de 40 ciclistas para las 7 etapas, fue recibido por Patricia Espinosa, Secretaria Ejecutiva de la UNFCCC Inia Seruiratu, Climate Champion de Algo Nivel de Fiji y Jochen Flasbarth, Secretario de Estado del Ministerio de Medioambiente de Alemania.
La Secretaria Ejecutiva de las Naciones Unidas para el Cambio Climático, Patricia Espinosa, dio la bienvenida a los ciclistas a la COP 23. “Es increíble ver a tanta gente que viene de París en bicicletas eléctricas. A medida que el proceso de las Naciones Unidas sobre el cambio climático se traslada de París a Bonn y va avanzando, debería ir inspirándonos a todos a progresar en la reducción de emisiones, a adoptar la tecnología que permita este cambio y a concienciar sobre la necesidad de una profunda transformación de las sociedades. Todos necesitamos movernos por el clima ahora, further, faster, together", dijo.
El Climate Champion de Fiji se unió durante la última etapa para llegar a Bonn antes de la apertura de la COP23, cuando Fiji tomará el relevo de Marruecos como Presidente de la Conferencia de las Partes.
Seruiratu, aseguró que fue un gran placer unirse al equipo de Moving for Climate NOW en la última etapa de su gira. Como Presidencia entrante, “hemos sido muy claros sobre la necesidad de apuntar hacia el objetivo más ambicioso del Acuerdo de París de limitar el aumento de la temperatura global a 1,5 grados centígrados. Juntos, debemos formar una Gran Coalición para una acción decisiva entre los gobiernos a todos los niveles, la sociedad civil y el sector privado ".
“El equipo de Moving for Climate NOW ha hecho su llamamiento a la acción en toda Europa. Cada individuo y organización con voluntad y poder de actuar tiene un papel que desempeñar y estamos muy contentos de apoyar iniciativas como ésta que ayudan a aumentar el apoyo para un movimiento más urgente hacia economías bajas en carbono y resistentes. Y sobre todo los que también promueven un estilo de vida saludable ", añadió.
Organizado por La Red Española del Pacto Mundial, la segunda edición de esta iniciativa, un evento oficial de la Cumbre clasificado como una "iniciativa avalada" por la COP23, reunió a un equipo ciclista multidisciplinar de 40 personas de diferentes organizaciones y países, con el objetivo de concienciar sobre la importancia de afrontar los retos del cambio climático, aunar esfuerzos en todos los ámbitos y la aplicación de medidas ambiciosas y urgentes para combatir el calentamiento global.
Bajo el lema Moving for Climate NOW, el equipo incluyó a representantes de la comunidad fijiana, Scotland’s 2020 Climate Group, la Agencia Internacional de la Energía, el World Resources Institute, IRENA, el Banco Europeo de Invesione, la OCDE, AIESEC y Ayuda en Acción, entre otros, para defender que "todos necesitamos movernos, tirando de todas las palancas ya" en la lucha contra el cambio climático.
El grupo entregó un Manifiesto a la Secretaria Ejecutiva de la CMNUCC, Patricia Espinosa, sobre las medidas urgentes necesarias para lograr una movilización climática efectiva. Como destacó Carlos Sallé, Director de Políticas Energéticas y Cambio Climático de Iberdrola: "el compromiso con las energías renovables, la necesidad de ver la lucha contra el calentamiento global como una oportunidad y no como una amenaza a la hora de construir un modelo económico sostenible, la urgencia de unir esfuerzos en todos los sectores de la sociedad y la importancia de atraer financiación ecológica".
Los casi 800 km de recorrido en bicicleta entre la capital de Francia y Bonn se dividieron en siete etapas que los participantes de Moving for Climate NOW recorrieron en bicicletas eléctricas, como símbolo de su compromiso con una tecnología que es beneficiosa para la salud y respetuosa con el medio ambiente.
Además, la iniciativa busca crear un espacio de reflexión sobre los diversos prismas de la cuestión climática. Con este fin, a lo largo de una semana, los participantes participaron en debates diarios sobre los diversos aspectos que influyen en el calentamiento global, como el cambio climático y la transición energética, las inversiones y las finanzas para una economía baja en carbono, la necesidad de ampliar la concienciación y la comunicación, y las políticas de mitigación. Esta edición, conde especial relevancia, se abordaron las medidas para adaptarse al cambio climático y proteger a las comunidades vulnerables, así como para concienciar sobre la importancia de los océanos y el papel vital que desempeñan en la regulación del clima y la salud del planeta.
“El clima es uno de los pilares de la Agenda para el Desarrollo 2030 y es un reto que no se puede abordar individualmente. La acción colectiva a través de las colaboraciones refuerza nuestras posibilidades de éxito, por lo que nuestro objetivo en esta iniciativa es ampliar el nivel de compromiso alcanzando al mayor número posible de grupos de interés ", afirmó Isabel Garro, Directora Ejecutiva de la Red Española del Pacto Mundial.
Las emisiones del viaje fueron verificadas por CeroCO2 y su huella de carbono ha sido compensada mediante la compra de créditos de carbono de las plataformas Climate Neutral Now y CeroCO2 de la ONU.
En la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático de este año (COP23, del 6 al 17 de noviembre) las naciones del mundo se reunirán para avanzar en la lucha contra el cambio climático.

Moving for Climate NOW llega a Bruselas para pedir acción contra el cambio climático antes de la COP23
Bruselas, Bélgica, 3 de noviembre de 2017. Ayer, un equipo de treinta ciclistas de la iniciativa "Moving for Climate NOW" se detuvo en Bruselas camino a la COP23 de Bonn. Esta iniciativa de ciclo neutral en materia de emisiones de carbono tiene por objeto concienciar sobre la urgencia de adoptar y exigir medidas para detener el cambio climático y acelerar la transición hacia un modelo energético más eficiente y de bajas emisiones de carbono. Coorganizada por Iberdrola y la Red Española del Pacto Mundial, la iniciativa cuenta con el respaldo oficial de la COP23 y su Presidencia, la República de Fiji.
El equipo está viajando en bicicletas eléctricas a lo largo de un itinerario de 800 kilómetros de París a Bonn para llevar su mensaje a la comunidad internacional en la COP23 de Bonn. A su llegada a Bruselas, el equipo fue recibido por los representantes de la Presidencia de la COP y un guerrero fiyiano que se unirá al equipo ciclista hasta su destino en Bonn.
Para la Red Española del Pacto Mundial e Iberdrola, la COP23 es una ocasión excepcional para movilizar la acción climática global. A través de esta iniciativa neutra en carbono, pretenden animar a ciudadanos, empresas y gobiernos a acelerar la lucha contra el cambio climático a través de acciones concretas. El transporte y la energía se encuentran entre los aspectos más importantes que contribuirán a lograr una economía más sostenible. La iniciativa "Moving for Climate NOW" tiene por objeto demostrar que es posible una movilidad limpia y que las emisiones de carbono procedentes de la energía y el transporte pueden reducirse al mínimo.
El equipo ciclista llegará a Bonn el 5 de noviembre de 2017 y entregará un Manifiesto contra el Cambio Climático en la Cumbre del Clima, destacando los principios fundamentales que el equipo ciclista considera que deben ser abordados para hacer frente al cambio climático. Estos principios incluyen un fuerte compromiso con las energías renovables, la urgencia de aunar esfuerzos en todos los sectores de la sociedad y la importancia de atraer financiación.

Moving for Climate NOW’ in Brussels to demand action against climate change ahead of COP23
Brussels, Belgium, 03 November 2017 - Yesterday, a team of thirty cyclists from the ‘Moving for Climate NOW’ initiative stopped in Brussels on their way to COP23 in Bonn. This carbon-neutral cycling initiative aims to raise awareness on the urgency to take and demand action to stop climate change and accelerate the transition towards a more efficient and low-carbon energy model. Co-organised by Iberdrola and the United Nations Global Compact Spanish Network, the initiative is officially endorsed by COP23 and its Presidency, the Republic of Fiji.
The team is riding on electric bikes over an 800-km itinerary from Paris to Bonn to take its message to the international community at COP23 in Bonn. At its arrival in Brussels, the team was welcomed by COP Presidency representatives and a Fijian warrior that will join the cycling team until their destination in Bonn.
For the Spanish Network of the United Nations Global Compact and Iberdrola, COP23 is a remarkable occasion to mobilize global climate action. Through this carbon neutral cycling initiative, Iberdrola aims to encourage citizens, businesses and governments to accelerate the fight against climate change through concrete actions. Transport and energy are among the most important aspects that will contribute to achieve a more sustainable economy. The ‘Moving for Climate NOW’ initiative aims to demonstrate that clean mobility is possible, and that carbon emissions from energy and transport can be kept to a minimum.
The cycling team will arrive in Bonn on 5 November 2017 and will be welcomed by hand over a Manifesto against Climate Change to the Climate Summit, highlighting the fundamental principles which the cycling team believes must be addressed to tackle climate change. Moving for Climate NOW inicia su ruta ciclista en París con destino a la COP23 de Bonn

La marcha ciclista Moving for Climate NOW, promovida por la Red Española del Pacto Mundial de las Naciones Unidas con Iberdrola, arranca hoy en París su recorrido en bicicleta eléctrica hasta la Cumbre del Clima -COP23-, que comenzará el próximo 6 de noviembre en Bonn (Alemania), bajo la presidencia de las Islas Fiji.
Esta iniciativa, evento oficial de la Cumbre y calificado como endorsed initiative por la COP23, está integrada por un equipo ciclista multidisciplinar formado por más de 40 personas de diferentes organizaciones y países que tiene como objetivo sensibilizar sobre la importancia del reto del clima, de unir esfuerzos desde todos los ámbitos y de actuar con ambición y urgencia para frenar el cambio climático.
Con la finalidad de difundir estos mensajes, los participantes recorrerán casi 800 kilómetros para llegar a Bonn el 5 de noviembre, tras pasar por Bruselas y otras ciudades europeas como Brujas y Urmond.
La Red Española del Pacto Mundial e Iberdrola consideran que la Cumbre de Bonn será una cita muy relevante para acelerar la definición de los compromisos de París e implementar el Acuerdo alcanzado en la Cumbre del Clima de 2015, celebrada en la capital francesa.
A su llegada a la COP23 de Bonn, Moving for Climate NOW hará entrega del Manifiesto de esta iniciativa contra el cambio climático. En este documento están recogidos los principios fundamentales sobre los que este equipo considera que hay que actuar para afrontar los retos del clima.
Destacan, por ejemplo, la apuesta por las energías renovables, la necesidad de ver la lucha contra el cambio climático como una oportunidad y no como una amenaza para construir un modelo económico sostenible, la urgencia de unir esfuerzos desde todos los ámbitos y la importancia de movilizar recursos de financiación.
Y en esta ocasión tendrán especial relevancia las medidas de adaptación al cambio climático, así como la protección de las comunidades vulnerables y, desde luego, la concienciación sobre los océanos y su papel fundamental en la regulación del clima y la salud del planeta.
La marcha ha verificado el cálculo de sus emisiones con CeroCO2 y ha compensado su huella de carbono a través de la compra de créditos de carbono en las plataformas Climate Neutral Now de Naciones Unidas y CeroCO2.
Segunda edición de ‘Moving for Climate NOW’
Moving for Climate NOW alcanza así su segunda edición, después de que el equipo ciclista recorriese el año pasado más de 1.000 kilómetros para llegar desde Sevilla hasta la Cumbre del Clima de Marrakech, COP22.
En la pasada edición participaron representantes de organismos internacionales como la Comisión Europea, el Banco Europeo de Inversiones y la Agencia Internacional de la Energía (AIE); instituciones como la Oficina Española de Cambio Climático, el Consejo Económico, Social y de Medioambiente de Marruecos, la Fundación Biodiversidad y el Ayuntamiento de Sevilla; iniciativas como el World Business Council for Sustainable Development o Carbon Disclosure Project, o la sociedad civil a través de ONGs como ECODES, Cruz Roja y Ayuda en Acción.
La mayor parte de estas organizaciones repiten esta ocasión y además se incorporan otras nuevas, como la Convención de Naciones Unidas para el Cambio Climático (UNFCC); el World Resources Institute (WRI) y la International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), entre otros.
La marcha de 2016 arrancó en Sevilla el 7 de noviembre y llegó el 16 de noviembre a la Cumbre del Clima de Marrakech, donde el presidente de Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, y el vicepresidente de la Red Española del Pacto Mundial de las Naciones Unidas, Víctor Viñuales, entidades organizadoras de Moving for Climate NOW, entregaron el Manifiesto de la iniciativa al director de relaciones externas y protocolo de la secretaría ejecutiva de la Convención Marco de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático, Horacio Peluffo.
En este encuentro también estuvieron presentes el comisario europeo de Acción por el Clima y Energía, Miguel Arias Cañete, la ministra de Agricultura y Pesca, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente, Isabel García Tejerina, y el director general de la Agencia Marroquí para la Eficiencia Energética y miembro del Comité Directivo de la COP22, Said Mouline.

The Moving for Climate NOW cycling trip, sponsored by the Spanish Network of the United Nations Global Compact and Iberdrola, will start today in Paris. Participants will travel on their electric bicycles to Bonn (Germany), where the Climate Summit -COP23- chaired by the Fiji Islands will begin on the 6th of November.

Second edition of ‘Moving for Climate NOW’
Moving for Climate NOW is running its second edition, after a group of cyclists travelled over 1,000 km last year from Seville to the COP22 Climate Summit held in Marrakesh.
Last year's edition saw the participation of the following international organisations: the European Commission, the European Investment Bank and the International Energy Agency (IEA); entities such as the Spanish Climate Change Office, the Economic, Social and Environment Council of Morocco, the Biodiversity Foundation and City Council of Seville; initiatives such as the World Business Council for Sustainable Development or Carbon Disclosure Project, or the civil society, through NGOs like ECODES, the Red Cross and Ayuda en Acción.
Most of these organisations are participating in this year’s edition and new organisations have joined, such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC); the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), among others.
The 2016 trip started in Seville on the 7th of November, arriving at the Climate Summit of Marrakesh on the 16th of November, where Iberdrola's Chairman, Ignacio Galán, and Víctor Viñuales, Vice-President of the Spanish Network of the United Nations Global Compact (organising committee for Moving for Climate NOW) handed over the Manifesto to Horacio Peluffo, Chief of Protocol and External Relations Officer of the Executive Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
