Committed Against Climate Change
Elisa Sainz de Murieta
Post-doctoral Researcher at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3)
Elisa works on climate change adaptation and decision-making under uncertainty. She is a Post-doctoral Researcher at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) and Visiting Fellow at the Grantham Research Institute (London School of Economics). She obtained a BSc. in Geological Sciences from the University of the Basque Country (2001) and a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering and Management at the School of Industrial Organization in Madrid (2002). After working for an industrial business group, in 2005 she was appointed Director of Biodiversity of the Basque Government. During this stage, she developed a strong interest in the science-policy interface, so in 2009 she enrolled in a doctoral programme on Quaternary and Environmental Change studies.
In 2010 Elisa joined BC3 where she developed her PhD on the environmental and economic impacts of sea-level rise in the Basque coast. She has been involved in several international research projects related to the economics of climate change adaptation (i.e. COACCH.eu, Econadapt.eu). She is also part of the international Research Network on Energy Workforce Transitions (ReNEWT), led by the Grantham Research Institute.
The transition to a low carbon economy has a big potential for job creation. A paradigmatic example can be found in naval shipyards that have managed to reinvent themselves by constructing different components of offshore wind power plants. This search for novel, imaginative and synergistic solutions is crucial.Carlos Sallé Alonso - Iberdrola
“We need to change narratives and explain to citizens that decarbonizing the economy is less costly than non-decarbonizing, because we are already paying huge costs included in our health, agriculture and infrastructures budgets to deal with the climate change and air quality problems produced due to the burning of fossil fuels”.Carlos Sallé Alonso - Iberdrola
Climate change is a reality and we already have it here. Scientists say that we are not aligned with a path that allows compliance with the Paris agreement. Climate change generates exponential problems that require exponential solutions.Carlos Sallé Alonso - Iberdrola
Seneca said: “Who doesn’t know where to go, will arrive to other place”. Concerning transition, he would say; Who doesn’t realize decarbonization is a must, will disappear, sooner than later.Carlos Sallé Alonso - Iberdrola
